“මෙත්තාභිවන්දනා” – Meththbibhi Vandana 2020 Online Poson Festival

It has been the practice of the Buddhists in our country, since ancient times to remember, with utmost devotion, the arrival of Arahat Mahinda Thero on the island carrying the message of the Buddha, by the observance of religious rituals. Such devoted remembrance is due to the fact that the arrival of Arahat Mahinda resulted in a significant transformation of the religious, cultural, social, and political civilization of Sri Lanka.

Meththbibhi Vandana 2020 poson festival successfully organized the Vividra Media club of the University of Vocational Technology and presented as a Srilankan first and most attractive and successful event using VIVIDRA Facebook page with the great contribution of esteem members of media club and colleagues. This is a remarkable event in Srilanka university history as an online event due to the covid 19 pandemic period.

The importance of poson festival is, Poson full-moon poya day (Poson Poya Day, Poson Festival) is celebrated the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BC, a festival of great historical and religious significance celebrated island-wide by Buddhists. Poson, held on the full moon day of June, commemorates the occasion over 2,000 years ago when Arahat Mahinda, son of Emperor Asoka of India, converted King Devanampiyatissa to Buddhism. The main center of the celebration is Mihintale, the ancient monastic complex where the royal missionary monk Mahinda perched the first sermon to the ruling king, and at Anuradhapura the ancient capital, to which a large crowd of pilgrims converges. Mass religious observances, illuminations pageants are part of the celebrations.

Therefore the organizing committee is decided to launch an online competition related to poson festival activities with fulfilling higher social values comprise of,

 

  1. Art competition

The art competition was held to celebrate the Poson festival.  There were many drawings presented by different sections, it proved the team effort and involvement of the participants. The judge panel appreciated all of the paintings and participants. All drawings by the participants at the poson Art Competition were exhibited in Vividra Media club Facebook page.

  1. Sadhaham massage competition

This is a video contest about a short presentation about the values of poson day and Buddhism. Several participants have already submitted their video clips related to the competition and Bhakti gee, plenty of video clips describing the  Dharma and the knowledge base passed on by Arahat Mairinda Thera guided us to rise as a proud and dignified nation. The teachings of the Gauthama Buddha trained us to be mindful of this world and the afterworld and thus be virtuous and civilized. The Poson Poya is etched in our hearts as the most significant day, because that was the day we received the Buddha Dhamma, the greatest ever gift we got as a nation.

 

  1. Digital Bhakti gee singing competition

Vividra Media club of the University of Vocational Technology introduced the new concept in digital community. All the performances of the participants were loved and appreciated by the viewers from all over the country.

This event is totally a digital concept and Vividra Media club uploaded all the videos of our official Vividra Media club Facebook page. This is Srilankan first digital Bhakti gee singing competition to showcase aspiring singers.

 

  1. Poetry competition

For the first time, a poson poetry competition was conducted at Vividra Media club of the University of Vocational Technology, during the metthabiwandana poson program, under the supervision of the esteem members team. Participants had to create their own poson poetries and handed over to the Vividra Media club for the competition. All were impressed about the creativity and talent of the participants.

Gigantic innovation of the university cultural events Vividra Media club of the University of Vocational Technology Celebrated photographers of all levels, professionals, amateurs and students alike, participated in the Photography Competition in the great values of Buddhism and special movements captured in the ‘Pinkam’ & Offerings. all photographs were exhibited in Vividra Media club Facebook page during the period of the competition.
